Not necessary to read in order.

He was married. She left after 7 months and has been gone for 10 years. She has finally written but died before he arrived. She left a secret, 9 year old boy. ( )

I found this story captivating; it held my attention all the way through. Silas, Kate, and Anthony are all likeable characters, who each must learn to overcome past hurts, and learn to trust. Coming from a family of teachers, I especially liked Kate. I'd definitely recommend this book, if you enjoy historical fiction. ( )

A delightful story that has a few twists and turns to arrive to where these two main characters can come together. Silas has had an uphill battle in making right choices. He has finally arrived to make amends from his estranged wife, but finds she has passed away and left him a son he never knew he had. Kate Dawson has cared for the sickly wife and son and has not heard anything good about Silas, so is very reluctant to believe him or to give him Anthony, his 9 year old son. After many conflicts and resolutions, Kate now trusts Silas and is willing to become his bride and raise Anthony, but then Silas learns of her past history of running away from people and he decides that maybe this isn't such a great idea after all. What will it take to get both these people on the same page and forgetting those things behind them, press on to a future where love can grow? A good series. You stay in touch with other folks you met in books 1 and 2, so it is always nice to see how those people are getting along also. Can be easily read though as a stand alone story. ( )

I have really enjoyed this series Unexpected Brides by Melissa Jagears. This was the third and last book in her series. I am sorry to see them end. It was fun seeing who's story was going to be next and how they would obtain their mail order bride. Since it mentions some of the past characters in each story, it may be best to read them in order. Although each book is complete and exciting enough to be a stand alone novel. ( )

The characters:
This hero and heroine are my favorite of Jagears' couples so far. The hero, with his tough past and his reasons for reticence stole my heart right off. And the heroine's tendency to run from issues, as well as her willingness to help others without condemning them, challenged my own attitudes.

The plot:
This author's plots are different from any other format I've read. The beginning of A.B.A.L. starts with a bang, then the first third of the book gently develops characters and mounts the odds against them. After that, it's a wild ride of unexpected twists!

The setting:
The overall setting stays light and never distracts from the plot or characters. Historical aspects are woven expertly into the action and dialogue.

The theme:
"Never give up." This story has heart. A fresh look at addictions will bring hope to the struggling reader and compassion to the judgmental ones. Excellent portrayals that felt very real.

The end:
The feeling I had after reading this book was similar to the one after reading Tamera Alexander's To Whisper Her Name. Sweet symbolism was woven throughout to bring the story a satisfying conclusion. And that epilogue!!! One of the best I've read in a while. :) ( )
