With great attention to accuracy, Gow’s insightful book about Archimedes acknowledges that all extant accounts of Archimedes were written after his death, thus no one knows what details about his life are accurate. Some stories may be true and others, legends. Nonetheless, much is known about the mathematician’s investigations and discoveries through his own writing. Apocryphal or not, no book about Archimedes would be complete without including his “eureka” moment in which he realized how knowledge about and experiments with water displacement could prove whether the king had been cheated by the craftsman who had made his crown. Archimedes’ experiments with equilibrium and the laws of the lever and calculations dealing with circles and spheres are sure to invite readers to further exploration as would the problems laid out in two of the mathematician’s books, The Sand Reckoner and The Cattle Problem, in which he explored large numbers. In readable prose, students will not only learn mathematical history but also will share in Archimedes’ delight in mathematical inquiry. The book includes an activities section, table of contents, source notes, glossary, further reading, and index. ( )
