This story is about a little girl who wishes for snow in order to keep her family home from work. This book is good for elementary age readers and can be used when introducing poetry. The words used have a rhythm to the way they are used in the book. The rhythm adds to the sense of poetry. The descriptive language in the story matches the illustrations and really add to the story. A young child make a wish for the hustle and bustle of life around her to slow down..at least for one day. She wishes for a blanket of snow that would cause all forms of transportation to halt and allow families to stay home together. If she gets her wish then they can spend the day together sledding. ( )

The artwork in this book is amazing. It would work even without words. This is an excellent “going to bed book” that you can read quickly but soak in the imagery to put your kids in a calmed mood.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0547979177, Hardcover)

There are planes to fly and buses to catch, but a small child wishes for a different sort of day in this striking picture book. When clouds gather and heavy flakes begin to fall, her invocation comes true. As a too-busy world falls silent, a family revels in the freedom and peace of a snow day.

In a spare text that reads as pure song and illustrations of astonishingly beautiful scratchboard art, Sidman and Krommes remind us that sometimes, if spoken from the heart, wishes really can come true.

Let snow fall overnight and change the world before morning, making it "slow and delightful and white."
