A master's thesis about the battle of Worringen, fought between on the one side the archbishop of Cologne, who was also the temporal duke of a large swathe of western Germany, and on the other the duke of Brabant with his alllies, including the citizenry of Cologne(!) and the count of Berg. Early in the battle, the Bergish forces were driven off the field, but they eventually returned, reinforced with a well-armed peasant force, to decide it by falling the archbishop's forces in the back.

The battle is traditionally seen as a pivotal point in the city of Cologne's emancipation from archiepiscopal control - Mahler questions this, arguing it was effectively autonomous already, the battle changing little. He also tones down the benefits for the duke of Brabant, arguing that the real victor, the one benefitting the most from the battle, was the count of Berg, who considerably increased his standing in the Rhine area. The book concludes with a look at the memory of the battle and it's role as a patriotic motif in Belgium (seeing itself as the successor to Brabant) and Cologne.

Not terribly well written perhaps, but interesting and about a subject there seems to be little serious history written on. I would have appreciated translations of the chronicle excerpts in Old Flemish!
