Instantly this book attracts a young reader with its colorful cover. The imagery gives a clue to the main theme hidden within the book. A GRIFFIN is tucked into the Q in QUEST. Written for 8 – 12 year olds it is an instant hit as it opens with a ‘Map of Wolfhaven’ and the castle.
This book follows on nicely from book 1 and is just as suspenseful. The four unlikely heroes come across the witch, Wilda, of Witchwood while trying to escape the amour clad tusked knight and military of faceless bog men. The tusked knight is none other than Lord Mortlake of Frostwick Castle.
Wilda conjures her magic upon them and they escape only to be once again on the run from Lord Mortlake.
They come across Hunter who is Tom’s father living with the wolves in the Witchwood Forest. Hunter shelters and feeds them then guides them to the east to find the griffin. Once again they are attacked and Hunter holds the defence while the four head off in search of the Griffin for its feathers, which are part of the key to solving the quest Instructed by the witch Arwen, these unlikely heroes must find four magical beasts from legend to save Wolfhaven. These sleeping beasts are a unicorn, griffin, dragon and sea serpent.
This series is similar in layout and storyline to Deltora Quest, however this is a lot lighter and easier to read and I found enjoyable for those readers beginning to read fantasy. Therefore we will be following this series of five books. ( )
