This was an interesting look at the difference between male and female writing styles, it looks at why women dominate romantic fiction and why men dominate mystery fiction. As it is an academic text it can be heavy at times but it is worth persevering.

Ms Faktorovich has conducted a lot of research, and gives a lot of background about gender equality as a whole in order to properly frame her argument.

The results of her questionnaire were interesting, as were the linguistic examinations of successful female mystery authors and successful male romance authors.
Do men and women really write differently? Do we use language differently and could you tell the author’s gender just from their linguistic style?

I’ve never knowing picked a book simply based on the author’s gender, but my dad refuses to read anything written by a woman and I would be interested to see if he would change his mind if there was some way that I could give him a book without the author’s name on it. I honestly think if he didn’t know that the book was written by a woman then he would actually enjoy it.
