Gloria Williams Luppo spins a magical tale of a child who uses her imagination to navigate through the issues of a ten year old.
Acceptance and belonging among her peers muddle the life of Jenny Maybelle who is also struggling with family problems. Father is ill and every member must pitch in to help out.
Jenny does her bit by doing chores for the neighbors and collecting bottles. Meanwhile she aspires to be like the town rich girl who is snooty and has a dog. She tries a perm which turns out to be a disaster, and acquires a dog that isn’t exactly like the Cocker Spaniel that she expected.
The 1950’s town of Bustlebout and it’s inhabitants are the milieu of this small girl who learns compassion for her less fortunate peers. At times money and deprivation can be linked in one person. And to lose a prize can be a great booster of one’s self esteem. This leads to her acceptance of her own uniqueness, in this instance an ability to fly.
