Very cute! A mentor book that teaches the power of loyalty, friendship, and determination. Love the sprinkle of pirate, sea loving vocabulary. ( )

This book is a story about a pig named Julie, who is discovered washed ashore by Stout Sam and Pip in a barrel. They learn that she is a talented pirate. The big bad pirate Barracuda Bill learns of Julie and kidnaps her and Stout Sam and Pip have to rescue Julie from Barracuda Bill. This book almost felt like a mix of a chapter book and a picture book to me. It's longer than most picture books, but it does have a lot of pictures in it. The art is fun and the story itself is pretty simple but I think it's too predictable. I think I could use this book in a classroom on a unit about pirates or maybe if the theme in class has to do with pigs.

Life on the islands is easy, and it gets easier if you can find a pig that has a nose for treasure. Then, if that pig gets shanghaied, you have to rescue it because it's not only your meal ticket, but because you also have learned to live and let live.
