Lovers on All Saints’ Day by Juan Gabriel Vásquez is a collection of seven short stories all of which take place in Europe, where the only connection between the stories is the emotional tone of deep longing. As I have come to expect, Vásquez’s prose is beautiful, however this collection of stories is deep, intense, and dark. The collection of stories are neither uplifting nor necessarily redemptive, however, they show humanity as it is, Vásquez does not hold back, and while the stories are short they are intense, emotionally packed, and convey the life of the characters in a rather short space of time. Each story is brilliantly written, filled with love affairs, betrayals, revenge and troubled pasts. Lovers on All Saints’ Day is a beautiful collection of short stories, each of which is a small example of society, yet these stories are often intense and dark, Vásquez is able to show the reader a more keen understanding of the human experience and the complexities of relationships and love.
