*Due sbandati, Charlie Waters (Gould) e Bill Denny (Segal), che hanno fraternizzato nelle sale da gioco tra bevute e scommesse, tentano il grande colpo in una memorabile nottata a Reno. Imprevedibile, apparentemente improvvisato, estenuante come la scoperta della fatuità della vittoria, porta alle estreme conseguenze la negazione altmaniana delle sceneggiature rigide, la concezione della regia come happening, "arte della digressione e della stratificazione" [E. Martini]. Senza perdere di vista, però, il fondo amaro del sogno dei due giocatori, nel quale la brillantezza si trasforma in malinconia e spleen. ( )
