First words
It is against the grain for me to write of Sir Thomas Parry-Williams in English for several reasons, but principally because I find that it is well nigh impossible to convey the consummate artistry with which he handled the Welsh language without giving examples in the original, and although he was a great scholar, it must be remembered that he was a still greater literary artist in prose and verse; indeed it may be said of him that after achieving an outstanding reputation as a philologist, he deliberately decided to achieve a still greater reputation as a creative writer in his native tongue.
On Sunday, 9 May 1976, Mr R. J. Thomas, former editor of Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru, A Dictionary of the Welsh Language, died peacefully while sitting in front of the fire.
