This 147 page book tells of J. P. Nunnally, who was born, apparently, on Dec 22, 1927, in Alabama and who was able to enlist in the U. S. Navy when he was 16. He served on the U.S.S. Fuller (APA 7) and saw action at Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu, in the Phillippines, and at Okinawa. The account of his experiences is drawn from letters he wrote forty years later to his adult son, with whom he had little contact as the boy was growing up. In his letters he tells frankly of his excessive drinking. The author, I think rightly, views Nunnally's alcoholism as a form of PTSD. There is a poignancy in the story and one wonders whether teenagers reading the book would be moved to realize the stupidity of allowing themselves to be a candidate for alcoholism by doing heavy drinking.
