Have you ever used a means to teach your children something, and they turn it around and use it on you? In this very short read, Ryan does just that. Both Mom and Dad kept reminding Ryan to place his dishes in the sink; pick up his clothes from the floor; etc. One morning, Ryan couldn’t find his shoes. Dad suggested maybe the Night Gnomes took his shoes. Ryan stayed awake one night and saw Dad take his clothes from the floor. Uh Huh! Dad is the Night Gnome. Ryan had fun showing Dad he could be a Night Gnome, too.

This would be a very enjoyable book for children to read. It teaches children to place their belongings in a designated place, but without it feeling like a lesson. I read it on kindle. Sometimes picture books do not display well on kindle, but this one did. The drawings were colorful, bright and very attractive. Even though the younger baby in the family didn’t have any direct interaction, I thought she was a fun and playful addition to the drawings. This is told in a simple rhyming scheme (A,A,B,B). However, I actually feel this took away from the story as some of the lines were too long for rhyming. For instance: “Dad read the story passionately, but it was dull and Ryan got quite bored. It was the story he heard yesterday! He’d almost rather do more chores! Ryan closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep. Maybe a better story would come in his …DREAMS!” Rating: 4 out of 5. ( )

Picking up his mess is just too much for Ryan. Between brushing his teeth, taking a shower, and being a kid, Ryan can't be bothered with another chore. That is until his dad warns him about the Night Gnomes, who snatch up misplaced items and may claim them as their own. At first, Ryan doesn't listen, but when his discarded shoes go missing, he has no choice but to use his secret detective skills and so he braves the night in search of the mysterious gnomes. What he finds, though, is even more than he bargained for. In this wonderfully illustrated, funny, rhyming bedtime story, young Ryan shares a few laughs while he unravels this mystery.
