Despite the fact that I disagree with almost all of his political views, I think Mark Helprin is America's greatest living novelist. This collection of short stories, many of which are astoundingly good, is his first book in almost 10 years. Since he now has a new novel out, too, here's hoping he's finally done with think-tanking and will get back to writing great fiction. ( )I have enjoyed Mark Helprin’s novels very much, but for me this collection of short stories was not quite as enjoyable. Way too sentimental for my tastes. A collection of sixteen exquisitely written stories bound together by the theme of personal responsibility and honor. These stories are full of humor, tragedy and an intense understanding of the human condition. Reviewed by: Julie I'm not a short story fan in general, but this collection is very, very good. Interesting themes, well crafted writing. no reviews | add a review
