This was a funny one, because my friend Heather gave it to me and I thought it was some cowboy poet shit (Heather is from Lethbridge) and so that was exciting (I once interviewed Corky Williams) but I guess not exciting enough because it gathered dust for a few years and then I picked it up and it turned out he wasn't a cowboy poet and Heather didn't give it to me (she's never heard of the guy). What it is is some young dude in the forties in Vancouver with two chapbooks to rub together who wants to occupy the middle ground between Robert Service and Dylan Thomas, but also to remind us to chill out and really try to appreciate the conventional wisdom and our neighbours and enjoy some doggerel about ghosts or Chinamen or desperadoes or the guy who lost his love to the bottle or Jesus, who would save us from his followers. It works, it's epicurean. I hope and pray that "impromptu verse" means that Gibson was making it up on the spot, dropping science like a nineteen-forties slam poet, but either way this is worth a flipthrough and a chortle in the unlikely event you come across it.
