In 1979 Lucien Rizos set out to photographically document New Zealand. Touring the country with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra he took a variety of images including people and local culture with his camera. This five year odyssey included photographs from both cities and small towns such as Eketahuna. The Alexander Turnbull Library accepted his negatives into their collection in 1988, and in 2005 Rizos took another look at his photographs and decided to finish a book he had started three decades earlier. This compilation is the end result. The book illustrates the daily existence of people around the early 1980’s. Looking at the photographs today is a nostalgic and sentimental journey. Essays by Damian Skinner and Ian Wedde introduce the photographs. This is a superbly wonderful anthology, a treasure. ( )
