( ) This was a really odd book. At first I thought it was a little creepy. Hinata is an unusually happy young girl (I'm guessing her age to be somewhere between 12 and 15) who lives on her own with her teddy bears. When he story starts a man, Shiro Asou, moves in next door to Hinata. This man also turns out to be her teacher. When he begins to pay attention to her, Hinata is immediately taken with him. Although her friends have reservations about the relationship Hinata has with her teacher, nobody comes right out and says anything to her. Not that she would get it if they did because Hinata appears to be slightly slow. At this point the manga was really looking like a "movie of the week" type story. However, the closer to the end we get a little more insight into a potentially nefarious plot involving Shiro and Hinata leading me to believe that the story might be something different than what it appeared at first. This was a bit of a relief. The drawing in this manga was very simple and not hard to follow at all. It is such a different style than the other manga I’ve read that it was kind of a nice change. Shiro is definitely drawn as a grown-up; there is none of the femme-boyishness that many male manga characters are drawn with. As I mentioned at the beginning, I was pretty well put off by this story. But, by the end I had become quite curious what the secret behind Hinata's living arrangement is along with whatever is going on with Shiro. Also, why is the book named “Suki” anyway? I know there are at least two more volumes for this series (I've ordered them from the library), but I didn't see anything beyond that. I'm just hoping that this is because it is a short series and not something that Clamp dropped mid-story. no reviews | add a review
