In Italia le arti-terapie hanno trovato un terreno fertile e le tecniche espressive (arte, danza, musica, teatro-terapia), utilizzate all'interno delle diverse strutture sanitarie che si occupano del disagio psichico, sono applicate nei servizi sanitari da più di trent'anni. Le caratteristiche comuni a tutte queste tecniche sono l'attenzione, la valorizzazione e l'utilizzo terapeutico del processo espressivo-creativo, che porta il soggetto a tradurre la sua interiorità nella propria opera grafico-pittorica, nel proprio dialogo sonoro, nella propria danza e, infine, nella propria rappresentazione. Questo processo/percorso, in altri termini, consente di manifestare all'esterno ciò che è dentro il soggetto.
