Collection of comic/graphic stories based on Aesop's and other fables. Different illustrators.

Like the Fairy tale comics, same editor, a three to five page spread retells a fairy tale in a graphic novel format. Different contributors all use their own style to retell these fairy tales and make this into a wide variety of how the comics are retold. Since there has been a volume prior to this edition, most of the fairy tales are not as well known but still include: The hare and the tortoise, The boy who cried wolf, and Lion and mouse. In addition there is The sun and the wind, The great weasel war, Leopard drums up dinner, The dolphins, the whales, and the sprat and many more. The last pages introduce the illustrators but there is no origin of the tale. A great way to introduce unfamiliar fairy tales to a young audience. ( )

This cute graphic novel is told in very short stories that include both known and lesser known fables modernized in graphic novel format. Grade school readers will find most of the stories fun and colorful, but some of the fables moral points will go over their heads. Some authors/illustrators were kind enough to include the moral at the end of the story. Since the target audience is so young, I would have preferred all the stories did this. For young readers this is very digestible, but some of the fables were much better than others, which is often the case in a volume of this type. If it seems slow in the beginning, stick with it until the end because overall it is worth the read. ( )
