Ricciardi and Maione investigate a cold case, one in which a man has confessed to the brutal murder of a loan shark and is now in prison awaiting trial, but his wife intuits he did not do it and is covering up for someone else. What is he hiding? Why does he cling to his confession? The investigation and solution were ingenious. Ricciardi pays particular attention to answers given in the interviews to fit pieces of the puzzle together, especially those that are slips of the tongue. A particular song about a moth flying close to a flame, "Palomma 'e notte", runs all through the novel and expresses in a way Ricciardi's actions towards Livia and Enrica, not that he wants to be cruel, but he doesn't want them to get close to him and then have him hurt them. He feels his special power is an obstacle. Livia's reaction leads to a very operatic--melodramatic and unbelievable--incident involving the Fascist Intelligence.

The mystery was intriguing and I liked as well the interior monologues of characters. I felt the story was spoiled at the last episode.
