The PsychoPomp Halloween Special anthology didn't thrill me, and the first few stories of this Christmas collection seemed ordinary, as well. Not bad and certainly not boring, although some could use additional editing and proofreading. But nothing there leaped out at me and demanded my attention, either.

Then I hit "Decorations," by Nelson W. Pyles, and that changed. Too many horror stories rely upon blood splatters to creep out readers, and that tactic leaves me unmoved. Author Pyles achieves true creepiness by taking it that step further, by making the splatters personal and, well, horrific. As the story reached its climax, it riveted me.

Ditto with Cameron Trost's "Naughty or Nice," which also goes that further step. Joshua Reynolds' "Krampusnacht" adds cleverness and good old fashioned fun to the mix. It didn't hurt that all three of these stories were well edited and thoroughly proofed. The remaining stories, again, weren't bad, but didn't rise above the usual gore.

Note that I tend to skip poetry. The fault's with me, or rather, my lack of patience, certainly not with the poets or their efforts.

We'll call this one four stars. ( )
