The Island at the Center of the World and The Battle for New York cover my home town, albeit at slightly different periods. Having read your review, it will definitely go on to Continent TBR. I enjoyed Shorto's The Island at the Center of the World, but have not read anything else by him. The Island at the Center of the World by Russell Shorto is a wonderful introduction to a little-known part of early Manhattan history, the Dutch period of early settlement.

This is certainly a better written book than The Island at the Center of the World which rambled a bit. I guess the latter could have used a more stringent editor.

I have to admit that I learned a lot from Island at the Center of the World, never having been explored the Dutch history of New York closely before. And it really is an interesting era. Roanoke Island: The Beginnings of English Amer ... If you have any interest in colonial America or New York City (or the metro area), I'd recommend Russel Shorto's The Island at the Center of the World. I have no reason to say it's unsound history (since I don't know a lot about New Amsterdam from other sources), and it reads like a novel.
