MacEntee began his account of his experiences in the Rising while in prison but it was not formally published until 1966. As he remarks in the foreword his book acknowledges the attempt made by men in County Louth to take part in the Easter Rising which is typically seen as a Dublin event bar isolated events in Meath, Wexford and Galway. He details how the Volunteers developed in Louth, political tensions between Sinn Féin and the Hibernians, which given his Belfast background was particularly perplexing, and how the movement was affected with the outbreak of WW1. He gives intimate accounts of his time traveling to Dublin meeting some of the signatories of Proclamation before the outbreak of fighting and his later participation in the fighting in Dublin. Overall the book demonstrates how confusing a period this week period was as people fought for Irish freedom against immense odds. ( )
