Kushiel's Dart - Jacqueline Carey. Really not sure I'll be continuing with series. Interesting story but chick needs an editor. Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve (standout). This book will probably be one of my favorites of the year. How did I forget it? Oh yeah, kid, that's why you keep a log. A ...

Kushiel's Mercy By Jacqueline Carey Hmm. Just go read the 1st trilogy in the series starting with Kushiel's Dart. That's a stunning expertly crafted fantasy, heavy with political intrigue, heartbreaking romance, gripping action and wonderful characters (and yes some erotica). However I ...

... By Jacqueline Carey Disappointing fantasy series (2 out of 5) Hmm. Just go read the 1st trilogy starting with Kushiel's Dart a stunning expertly crafted fantasy, heavy with political intrigue, heartbreaking romance, gripping action and wonderful characters. Then just stop and ...

#48 Any reason why you haven't added Kushiel's Dart, Ian?

Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. Behemoth Cat recommended this before, and I agree with him. Interesting world, well-written, and an interesting storyline. The BDSM sex scenes didn't feel like cheap erotica fantasy either, which I was afraid would turn me off the novel and the trilogy. Might ...

... Hobb a disservice here, as she’s actually a pretty good writer. Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel's Legacy trilogy (Kushiel's Dart) is somewhat notorious for the presence of lots of S&M sex, but I found that the sex wasn’t gratuitous at all (and was pretty well done). Well written ...

... like historical fiction, the majority of Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's series are around 700 pages, the first of which is Kushiel's Dart. It is literally an epic series, though, so I'd only recommend it if you are looking forward to feeling compelled to read seven books, haha. I love your ...

... was that one time when I was (allegedly) intoxicated. But if it wasn't captured on video, it never happened. Kushiel's Dart I've been meaning to read Carey's Kushiel series ever since I discovered Banewreaker and Godslayer, but I never did. Because of the book's ...

>34 Both Kushiel's Dart and The Enchantments of Flesh and Spirit are also ones I heard about here, LTers have such great suggestions :-) >35 Thanks! It was really fun putting it all togther.

... I noted it most recently in her latest, Kushiel's Mercy, but I think she's done it well in all her books after the first, Kushiel's Dart. Best way to test is if you've never read one of these, try picking up a later book and see if I'm right. But to really see how she's done it, you ...

Kushiel's Dart and The Enchantments of Flesh and Spirit are two of my favorite books! I hope that you enjoy them. (: I've already filled out all of my lists, too. When I told my friends about it, they just smiled and shook their heads. My boyfriend was more surprised about the number of ...

I think Kushiel's Dart will appeal to guys because there is enough of battle strategy and political intrigues to keep one guessing.... as long as they aren't averse to a female being the leading character in the book. :-) Thinking to read something with a different pace, I broke open the Englis ...

I've just finished Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey and loved it. I think it's just a few notches below Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay but it kept me gripped throughout and I begrudged every moment I had to put down the book to get on with activities such as work, meals and sleep. I'm starting ...

... it and it was well worth my having to work like a dog today to catch up. :-) The book in question? The beautifully written Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. A young girl, Phedra, born with a red blemish in her eye, is delivered to one of the 13 Houses of night pleasures to be trained ...

Started on Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey and so far, so good. I'm liking it and wish I had more time to really sink my teeth in this for long stretches.

... plot is laid out in the first few chapters and it just plays out exactly as expected with no surprises. The first book, Kushiel's Dart, is great but the series slowly and steadily goes downhill after that. Which is worse - a sudden downturn in quality or a long drawn-out disappointment?

... x? Depending on the story I don't really mind either way, so long as the story isn't overwhelmed with it. I haven't read Kushiel's Dart or Daughter of the Blood yet, which seem to be the two where most people find it all more acceptable than most (they are in my tbr pile).

#2 BigJoel55 I found the writing in Kushiel's Dart to be awkward, too.

... to steer clear of books (fantasy and SF) that include sex as a major, or even minor, component. I made this point because Kushiel's Dart is my next read and I was wary of the series for a while because of the use of sex in the story. My reasoning is not moral at all. I simply feel that in ...

... I've read so far, the Kushiel series walks the line between story and sexuality provocatively but interestingly. After Kushiel's Dart I'll be reading Stephen R. Donaldson's Fatal Revenant. I loved the older books, but Runes of the Earth left me unimpressed. Any opinions?

I'm reading and enjoying Kushiel's Dart, I'm now wondering why it sat on my TBR pile for 4 years.

... woman, for her independence, intelligence, insight, warmth, and strength. This book was beautiful in every way. 30. Kushiel's Dart (Sister Rec) This was a well-conceived fantasy book with some erotic components, as well. Not quite my cup of tea, but it did keep me entertained on a ...

Thanks Kmaziarz; I haven't heard from my friend yet, but I looked up Kushiel's Dart, and it doesn't seem to fit; the language doesn't match what I expect to see from her description.

... what you say she remembers, but it couldn't have been one of the Kushiel novels by Jacqueline Carey, could it? Perhaps Kushiel's Dart, the first one?

I never wanted a tattoo until I read Kushiel's Dart.

Xicanti, I will read Mesuline, thanks! Also, Black Jewels Trilogy = love! I reccomend Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series for similar awesomeness.

I have not read Kushiel's Dart but I have read The Tale of Despereaux

I haven't read Kushiel's Dart, but I have read The Many Mice of Mr Brice.

I haven't read Bunnicula, but I have read Kushiel's Dart.

#13 Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. Wow. What a work of imagination. This is such an impressive first work that I'm astounded by it. My only question is whether I'll have to get the rest of the series and read it--I'm not sure, at this moment, if I could manage another such adventure. Wow.

I'm with the Skaldi northeast of Terre d'Ange, desperate to get back home, warn the heir, and get revenge, in Kushiel's Dart, Jacqueline Carey's brilliant debut. What an imagination! This thread just about encapsulates why I love to read--the immersion into another world.

Over the past couple of days I've gotten Kushiel's Dart and Kushiel's Avatar both by Jacqueline Carey from the newer, smaller used bookstore close to me. I've read all of Carey's books, but from the library, and these are some of my favorites so I snapped them up. Also the second in the Dune ...

... (why did he settle for the lackluster Rowena?) Gretchen from Michener's The Drifters Phèdre no Delauney from Carey's Kushiel's Dart and sequels (hey, everyone is allowed a fantasy!)

... For fiction, while I wouldn't call it an influence per se, I absolutely love the research Jacqueline Carey put into her Kushiel novels. I reread them not only for my love of the characters and story (though those are amazing in their own right), but for what little bits of esoterica she ...

... paper I'm slowly working on. Then there's my textbook for the same class (Old Testament) and an umpteenth rereading of Kushiel's Dart.

Some of it sounds vaguely like Kushiel's Dart.

I had several favorites. A game of thrones (song of ice and fire) by George R.R. Martin, Kushiels' dart by Jacqueline Carey and Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I am looking forward to discover other new works this year!

... is compares to Ash for its stark, brutal portrayal of suffering and war, and redemption that might be found therein. Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey (6 books comprising two trilogies, and I'm mainly thinking of the first trilogy) - these books are richly evocative, with a heroine Phedre ...

... recommend his Sarantine Mosaic duology which is, honestly, utterly haunting. Also - you might like Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series - a warning though, it can be a bit risque, but Phedre (the main character in the first three (there are two trilogies, each with a different protagonist) is ...

I was surprised to like Kushiel's Dart and Kushiel's Chosen (that's as far as I've gotten to date-I just started the series last week), as I don't much like the "vast empire" type. I picked up the first book because I'd seen a description of it as "soft core SM porn" and I was curious. Of ...

Xeyra-- Please feel free to butt in any time. ^___^ I liked the writing style and the subject of Kushiel's Dart, myself. I thought the first book was brilliant. I did prefer the parts of the trilogy when Phedre wasn't traveling all over creation... and parts got very tough-going, as far ...

Yesterday from BookMooch I received The Serpent Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt and Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey.

#32, Michael_P Agree about Kushiel's Dart. And I admire how far you got. I dropped it back at the base of the TBR stack after one chapter. Didn't find it particularly engaging, and I was totally turned off by the first person POV. I don't know when it happened but I've come to loath ...

... abandon it until I had the time and energy to focus more and give it a fair read. ---- I'm about to abandon Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. Many recommended it, but after 300 pages, I feel absolutely no compulsion to keep reading. I could accidently leave it at a train ...

... types, as I was getting truly overwhelmed! Suits pedantic lil me too. I, too, read Pride and Prejudice lately, and the Kushiel's series is one of my favourites. How do you like the switch from Phedre to Imriel? It threw me a little, and I find most main characters hard to live up to Phedre, ...

... Predictable and shallow I thought. Um... Reading What the Dickens? by Gregory Maquire, and then I'm to start on Kushiel's Dart I'm very excited about that last one, so I'm gonna get my other two read as fast as I can...

goddessladyj in FantasyFans : Kushiel's Dart (Jun 22, 2008, 5:06pm)

I just finished Kushiel's Dart and I'm not sure what to think about it. I enjoyed the character of Phèdre, and for the most part, the plot, but much of the political storyline confused me, and I felt that Carey's execution left something to be desired ("if I had known then what I know now..." ...

... was trying out new forms of employment.. Wilde's The Canterville Ghost - that dude is tragically hilarious. Phedre - Kushiel's Dart - I might have a crush on her. Wonder what my husband would think. Hm. Auriane - The Light Bearer - now that's one strong barbarian chick. I want her to ...

... Kushiel's Mercy, Jacqueline Carey - number six in the Kushiel's Legacy series, which I adore. I picked up the first, Kushiel's Dart, when it was the only one out based on the fact that it referenced Gone with the Wind. I don't see much to compare beyond the strong female who makes ...

I started Kushiel's Dart yesterday. So far, so good.

... care for her retelling of Tolkein (Banewrecker is the first book). But I love the two Kushiel trilogies. The first is Kushiel's Dart. WARNING: Explicit S&M sex. If you are at all squeamish about it, you might want to give it a pass. What's cool about her books are the worldbuilding and ...

... my memory, I can only think of two books I've read that could possibly fit your request. One is Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Dart (the first book in a series), which has some "magic", but I would classify it more as mysticism as it is connected to the religion in the series and is not a ...

Welcome to LT, munro and lisacharlotte18! I finished Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Dart yesterday morning, and am now about 250 pages into Kushiel's Chosen. This has been a wonderful weekend for just lying in bed and reading. *insert content sigh here*

I started Kushiel's Dart last night. I finally decided I couldn't wait any longer! I'm only maybe 75 pages in, but it's pretty decent so far.

I started reading Kushiel's Dart and really liked about the first half of the book. I'm about a hundred pages into Kushiel's Dart. It's okay so far, but I'm still waiting for that wonderful point where everything clicks and I realize that I really and truly care about what's going on.

I'm planning to start Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey soon. It comes highly recommended and has a very nice opening sentence, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Day Two of wishing I was still sleeping. I really should go to bed earlier... but I'm rereading Kushiel's Dart so I can't!

Daggerspell by Katharine Kerr Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin The Briar King: Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone by J. Gregory Keyes

Just finished Kushiel's Dart and am taking break before hitting Kushiel's Chosen. So for now, it is The Beatles by Bob Spitz.

I just finished Kushiel's Dart. It was delicious feast. There were some chapters that I put off reading, just letting the anticipation build. But then, there is a big story behind that one.

glabrous, what you've described is one of the reasons i like Jacqueline Carey so much. (You might try Kushiel's Dart.) There's sex and eroticism, but there's also espionage, spirituality, adventure, fantasy -- a wonderful mix.

Just opened Steppenwolf last night, to get some relief after doing plumbing in very tight quarters. Still working on Kushiel's Dart.

Kushiel's Dart is the first one, then Kushiel's Chosen, then Kushiel's Avatar which I'm on but haven't started yet. I'm not sure what comes next or how many there are. They're long and absorbing, with lots of travel, politics and intrigue. I need a break between books, but I'm really ...

My dad gave me Kushiel's Dart when he'd finished it. I'd guess it's the first one because she is a child when it starts. I've read Girl with a Pearl Earring and Middlesex. Liked them both, especially Middlesex. I'm about to start The Trial by Franz Kafka.

Kushiel's Dart. A wonderful read so far, but I confess I am struggling with people and place names. I keep flipping back to find out who these people are who are conquering regions or attending parties. She needs a guidebook, kind of like the ship guides to the Patrick O'Brian series.

... high. I really, really want to reread some of my books that I haven't read in years. I finally capitulated and reread Kushiel's Dart a while ago, and I'm going to reread the rest of the trilogy soon. In my opinion, if you really want to reread something, you should just read it. Your TB ...

Today's mail brought Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. I heard so many rave reviews on here that I figured I'd give it a go.

I finished Kushiel's Dart and promptly BookMooched it since it was clear that I'm never going to read that beast again. ;) Now am about halfway through Slow River by Nicola Griffith -- a scifi novel all about a sewage treatment plant, who woulda thunk it?

No Harry Potter here either. I'm a sf/f snob. ;) Over the weekend I finished Kushiel's Dart which was quite the beast clocking in at 900 pages. I wasn't sure I'd make it through ;) but did, and am glad I stuck with it even though it wasn't really my thing. Now back to Slow River which I ...

I'm reading Kushiel's Dart which I'm having difficulty getting into. I just don't think it's my kind of thing. It's 900 pages long and I've gotten about 100 pages in and it's a real slog. If it doesn't get more interesting soon I might have to give up on it. I'm also reading Slow River which ...

... (or longer version on my livejournal, username chlaal) for details. It was not what I expected. I am now trying to read Kushiel's Dart since so many people I know (online and off) have recommended it. So far it isn't grabbing me -- not my kind of thing. But I'm going to stick with it a bit ...

... One is Slow River which seems like it would be my kind of thing but for some reason I can't get into it. The other is Kushiel's Dart which is definitely NOT my kind of thing (I'm much more about hard scifi than fantasy) but I've only just started it so will give it a bit more of a chance ...

... you like Anne Bishop, you might want to give Jacqueline Carey a try: I very much like her first Kushiel trilogy, Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Avatar, and Kushiel's Avatar. She's started a second Kushiel series, beginning with Kushiel's Scion, which looks promising. I like Merc ...

... mouth! ;) I just bought a stack of new (or new-to-me) scifi/fantasy by women, so next on my list is probably going to be Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey or A Brother's Price by Wen Spencer.

Continuing, I tried Kushiel's Dart, but gave up on it. I would also list in my own top 50, the Dune series of Frank Herbert, and C S Lewis' Space Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength.

... although there is debate over C or K). However we can't agree on girls names. I like Phedre from Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Dart and Lyra from Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass. My husband doesn't care for either. Being a book lover I would like to give a potential daughter ...

I'd definitely recommend Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel trilogy, beginning with Kushiel's Dart. I think someone mentioned it. I have read it, and Phedre does quite well as a strong heroine despite her initial job description. These are some of my favorite books. I'll also echo the books by ...

Re 19, izziewithay - I think you're in for a great read with Kushiel's Dart - I love it and the rest of the series! As for me, I've just finished Threads: The Reincarnation of Anne Boleyn by Nell Gavin, which was much better than I expected, given it's a reincarnation fantasy about Anne. ...
