I'll be honest. I am *very* picky when it comes to detective/ mystery novels. I decided to give this book a chance, and boy am I glad I did!

It was engaging right from the start, full of British humour and wit. Toolan did a great job of ramping up reader curiosity regarding Lawrence Vann (who immediately took on the appearance of James Spader for me!), and the mysterious Chief Inspector Jellicoe. I still want to know more about that mystery!!

I adored the play on names, most especially Zig Batten and his Sergeant Chris 'Crystal' Ball. Zig's reminiscing and inner monologue commentary are great. They give wonderful insights into Zig's past, and into his nature.

Things are set so that a series can grow up around Batten/Ball and I certainly hope one does! To all who enjoy sleuthing mysteries, check this book out! I am confident that you'll enjoy it .

**If you are an American reader, unfamiliar with British English, there are idioms, euphemisms, and slang words (and some everyday words), that are very different from American English. Most are easy to suss out from connotation. Just wanted to throw the warning out there for those who might either dislike reading British English books, or are unfamiliar with differences between British English and American English. They aren't quite the same language! ( )
