The Three Little Pigs is a story about how hard work pays off. I like this book for two reasons, but have reservations due to the implied violence. The first reason I like it is due to the repetitive nature of the writing. We all know the familiar, "little pig, little pig, let me come in," but this version has the first two pigs building "a slap-dash little house," of straw and twigs, respectively. Second, the illustrations are used in a way that supports the theme of the book. When the third little pig builds his house out of brick, there are four illustrations on one page. Each picture chronicles the pig at different stages of the construction, lending to the idea that he put a good bit of work into building his house. My only problem with this book is that the first two pigs are obviously eaten by the wolf, and the third builds a fire with a large pot of boiling water, into which the wolf falls while trying to enter the pig's house through the chimney. These violent acts in a children’s book are probably due to the fact that this book was published during a time before such considerations were universally made. ( )
