I wanted to go home. Moving to America wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for the family next door, but because of my so-called guardian-and I used that term lightly-we were the latest family to take up residency in Thirteenth Street, and I was the sole target of the woman over the fence. The Word: a volitile relationship and a dangerous lifestyle never looked so good!

The name for the book couldn’t more perfectly reflect the story. This was a dark, gritty story that highlights the dark shades of life and kept me on edge.

We follow Teagan a feisty Irish lass who follows her Uncle to the US for his career. Teagan doesn’t play by the rules, she pushes everyone’s buttons and is constantly stepping over the line. She struggles to fit in so decides not to. She catches the eye of bad boy Noah, her next door neighbour and therefore receives the wrath of Elle, Noah’s half-sister who believes Noah belongs to her.

The book reminded me a lot of Jay Crownover’s Better when he’s bad. Noah is not a nice boy – he isn’t even a typical bad guy – he is dangerous, edgy and oh so irresistible because if it. Being with Noah is like playing with fire, being in the warmth is glorious but if you stay for too long you’ll get burnt. Noah is trouble – he is in trouble with the law, and his lifestyle weighs heavily on his soul.

Tegan and Noah together are explosive and there is never a dull moment between the two. Noah loves fiercely and fast, and Teagan often doubts whether this is a good thing. Their lives are complicated and not easy, but somehow they find resolve with each other. It’s hard to tell whether they bring out the best or worst in each other – I guess it’s a little bit of both.

The book is full of deceit, intrigue and darkness. At times it can be confronting and it makes no apologies for doing so. The darkness makes the story that much more interesting. I was trying to download the second book before finishing this one and was disappointed to find it wasn’t out yet. The book ended in such a volatile explosive way I can’t wait to uncover what happens next.

Love you long time. ( )
