En 1921, Ewa y su hermana Magda dejan su Polonia natal y emigran a Nueva York. Cuando llegan a Ellis Island, a Magda, enferma de tuberculosis, la ponen en cuarentena. Ewa, sola y desamparada, cae en manos de Bruno, un rufián sin escrúpulos. Para salvar a su hermana, Ewa está dispuesta a aceptar todos los sacrificios y se entrega resignada a la prostitución.
