Very good ending! I was annoyed when I thought I had it figured out and that was going to be it, but low and behold- the author does a great job of really keeping secretive the twist. Looking forward to reading more by this author! ( )

What it's all about...

Olivia and Jack have a really involved past. They were friends in college first, then lovers, they were engaged, suffered through family bereavements, Olivia's infidelity and haven't seen each other in over 20 years. Olivia is a defense attorney...Jack is a writer. Jack is accused of murder...Olivia defends him. A phone call from Jack's teen age daughter gets Olivia involved.

Why I wanted to read it...

This book just sounded seriously good. Olivia is feisty...independent...fierce and an amazing attorney. From the start she believes that Jack is innocent. Her past knowledge of him allows her to believe in his innocence. But Jack's path to freedom is tricky. It's filled with deceptions and lies. Olivia's job is a difficult one. And every success in his defense is matched by a hard defeat.

What made me truly enjoy this book...

Olivia was an integral force in this book. Her personality, her family, her back story, her brittleness, her fierceness...she was hard and edgy and combative. She loved her martinis!

Why you should read it, too...

I wish I could tell you more about the plot and these characters but...as with all mysteries...the intensity and suspense begins with the very first page. Readers who love a tense mystery...with tons of twists and turns...should love this one. I loved the writing, the pace and the characters. ( )

This was a quick read about a lawyer who defends her old boyfriend in a triple murder. We learn about their past relationship and his present family situation. Near the end I was able to figure out who really did it, as I have seen this type of ending before. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0062390481, Hardcover)

In this breakout standalone novel of suspense in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on a Train, a woman agrees to help an old boyfriend who has been framed for murder—but begins to suspect that she is the one being manipulated.

Twenty years ago she ruined his life. Now she has the chance to save it.

Widower Jack Harris has resisted the dating scene ever since the shooting of his wife Molly by a fifteen-year-old boy three years ago. An early morning run along the Hudson River changes that when he spots a woman in last night’s party dress, barefoot, enjoying a champagne picnic alone, reading his favorite novel. Everything about her reminds him of what he used to have with Molly. Eager to help Jack find love again, his best friend posts a message on a popular website after he mentions the encounter. Days later, that same beautiful stranger responds and invites Jack to meet her in person at the waterfront. That’s when Jack’s world falls apart.

Olivia Randall is one of New York City’s best criminal defense lawyers. When she hears that her former fiancé, Jack Harris, has been arrested for a triple homicide—and that one of the victims was connected to his wife’s murder—there is no doubt in her mind as to his innocence. The only question is who would go to such great lengths to frame him—and why?

For Olivia, representing Jack is a way to make up for past regrets, to absolve herself of guilt from a tragic decision, a secret she has held for twenty years. But as the evidence against him mounts, she is forced to confront her doubts. The man she knew could not have done this. But what if she never really knew him?
