I loved Niven's Known Space series when I was younger. A Gift From Earth, Tales of Known Space, Ringworld and The Ringworld Engineers etc. But that's a thread for another post...
I have to agree that Dune Messiah and Rama II were pretty poor compared to their predecessors. I'd also add Ringworld Engineers, and especially Ringworld Throne by Niven. ... horrible The Ringworld Throne, which was a huge let down after his excellent Ringworld, and the acceptable sequel The Ringworld Engineers. #49 they already make films out of shit books. Some of the films are actually quite good - like The Commitments or Marnie. OTOH, they managed to make a shit film out of a shit book, The D ... ... novel published that year.
An they do find out SPOLIER WARNING that it was built by the Pak Protectors. (Or was that in The Ringworld Engineers?)

Having just reread Heinlein's Double Star as a group read here, I'm sure you will find willing participants if ... ... I'm pretty sure Larry Niven invented what is now called hard SF, and I certainly loved that stuff; Protector and The Ringworld Engineers are still on my once-a-year list. I realize that 'hard SF' can be applied to a lot of the 'sf-with-rivets' put out earlier, but Niven was the ... Go for some variety then.
