I'm getting into how "pulp-y" this series is (probably not intentionally). Even written in the 80's, the language seems a bit out-dated (and therefore sort of fun).

Examples:
"That bastard! That first class bastard! I'll take him to the cleaners!"

and

"Didja hear that!" Joe exclaimed. "She's dead as a door nail, and he wants to know if she's alright." Actually, this entire exchange of dialogue had me cracking up.

Also, is Ames basically "the butler"? ( )

I really like this series. This is book #2 in the JP Beaumont series and JP is working on his own time to solve the murder of a lady friend. JP has quite the luck with the ladies doesn't he? Poor guy. This story had some side stories too -- his partner's child custody case is resolved and JP works on a case for the Seattle PD where a duo of teenagers is putting homeless people on fire. The second book is also pure bubblegum mystery as well, though Jance starts to lay the groundwork for Beaumont’s battles with alcoholism. Fun, light reading.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0380896419, Mass Market Paperback)

Top ten New York Times bestselling author J.A. Jance brings us a classic thriller featuring Seattle homicide detective J.P. Beaumont as he tracks down an obsessed killer.

It was like a scene from a movie: the beautiful blond screaming on a Washington beach, a dead man lying at her feet; the dashing Homicide detective arriving to offer kindness and solace to the distressed lady. What it wasn′t was a restful vacation for J.P. Beaumont. And now a murderous mix of politics and passion is turning Beau′s holiday into a nightmare - and leading the dedicated Seattle cop into the path of a killer whose bloodlust is rapidly becoming an obsession.
