yeas i read The Spiral Staircase...and while Karen Armstrong suffered from Bi-polar disorder...the protagonist of Lying Awake suffered from a lesion in the Temporal Lobe in her brain. ... 79: jdthloue, have you read the spiral staircase ... someone told me that it reminded her of Lying Awake. I didn't make much headway into my 888 challenge as I read four ARCs this month. My favorite titles were The Spiral Staircase, Guernica, and ... For this group, I chose The Spiral Staircase, Karen Armstrong's sequel to Through the Narrow Gate. It is an memoir, primarily discussing her life in the years after she left a Catholic convent.
Ms. Armstrong entered the convent in 1962, at the age of 17. She writes "I was filled with ... I'm going to read The Spiral Staircase by Karen Armstrong. She is a former Catholic nun and well known religion writer. This book (memoir) chronicles the years after she left the convent. I have The Spiral Staircase : my climb out of darkness sitting in on an unread stack in my living room. This came out in 2004.
I do not own Through the narrow gate. It came out originally in 1981 and has had a clutch of subtitles over the years:

It is a hardcover, which I only bought because I wanted to read the story. I just finished The spiral staircase by Ethel Lina White. Excellent!...and quite different from the movie, which starred Dorothy McGuire, George Brent, and Ethel Barrymore. The suspense grows with each page.....well worth reading. Mary Roberts Rinehart wrote really good mysteries. She was sometimes called "the US Agatha Christie" I read The spiral staircase I've spotted Karen Armstrong's The Spiral Staircase: My Climb Out of Darkness on Bookmooch. Seems interesting. Is it worth going after? I've read Karen Anderson's The Spiral Staircase about her spiritual search--and had thought she had long ago lost her Christian beliefs. Perhaps the staircase has spiraled around once more? I have her books on Islam and Mohammed in my tbr pile.
