... group! I disliked The Secret Life of Bees, but I'm really looking forward to reading Zeitoun. If you haven't read What is the What, also by Dave Eggers, go for it. It's a fabulous book that describes the life of one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. It's fiction based on a true story.

> bfertig- Thanks for the suggestion on What is the What. I will add it to my bulging wishlist!

>msf, if you've got What is the What, I'd move that in front of Heartbreaking Work - both are good, but What is better. I think I reviewed both of them when I read them, if you care for my full thoughts. I've got Zeitoun on my wishlist as well. Agreed, that Under the banner of heaven ...

After having read What is the What, I'd be delighted to try another book by Dave Eggers. Happily, though, Zeitoun is already on my wish list. :) There already were two books by Jon Krakauer that both my husband and I read and loved. They Were Into Thin Air and Into the Wild. (I ...

... Zoe! I'm a sucker for interesting books, and A Long Way Gone just attached itself to my wishlist. :) I recently read What is the What by Dave Eggers which is a similar story that takes place (as a flashback) in the south of Sudan. The child in the story flees for his life, does not ...

Bonnie and Mark, you are both in for a treat with Zeitoun. It will make my Top Ten for the year. I also liked Egger's What is the What? about the "Americanization" of one of the lost boys of Sudan.

>42 Squaky, yes, I've read What is the what and also highly recommend it. Based on that and his memoir, and a newer book on Katrina, I'm sensing he has a fascination with trauma. He's a decent writer (though I thought his book on Sudan was better than his memoir), so I think I'll go for the one ...

... are based on fact. One amazing book I recently read was the about Valentin Achak Deng, a Sudanese refugee. Although What is the What was written by Dave Eggers as a novel, most of what happened in the book was real. If you haven't read it yet, run to get it. No kidding! ETA: A ...

Linda, I'll have you know that your review made me break a solemn promise. After the HORRORS of What is the What, I swore I'd never Eggers myself again. Now I have to read Zeitoun. *hope she's happy with herself, evil cruel book-siren*

Hi Bonnie!! :) On a similar vein as What is the What, They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky: The True Story of Three Lost Boys from Sudan is a heartbreakingly true account.

I'm pretty sure Eggers was actually working on What is the What long before the Million Little Pieces scandal. Eggers took on the project with Deng expecting it to be something like a six month project if I remember correctly, but it ended up taking up about five years. Deng was adamant ...

I also had the same reaction with What is the What, I'm guessing the fiction part is due to the whole million little pieces fiasco. It read very true, unfortunately, and you are right, it is going on again/still in Darfur and many other places. It makes us look at our lives and the lives of ...

I had the same reaction to What is the What--it's good to see others reading it as well. If you ever get a chance to hear Eggers speak, it's a really interesting and eye-opening experience. His chain of literacy stores alone is inspiring, and with his work on What is the What added in, he ...

Some people may notice that I moved What is the What into the NF socio-political books category. I decided it belongs there, because Valentino Achak Deng is a real person. His story, and his voice, becomes the vehicle for telling "truths" of many of the other thousands of "Lost Boys". Crucial ...

... Eggers. Infinite Jest goes on. In a good way. I love it more than a little bit. What is the What is pretty sympathetically written. I'm not saying it's so good that I feel like I'm there, but it's well written from its characters viewpoint and distracts me from what can occasionally be the ego of ...
