( )"Cartooning is a peculiar art form, a 'convergence of seeing and reading,' as has been pointed out by Chris Ware." (from Introduction, by Ivan Brunetti). Beutiful sourcebook to be used in interdisciplinary courses including the arts, literature and English, pop culture, and history. A sampling of Who's Who in comic art of the 20th century. Contributors include Chris Ware, Robert Crumb, Seth, Art Spiegelman, Daniel Raeburn, Charles M Schulz and many others. There is an introduction, but mostly the book is just examples of each of the cartoonists' work. Sometimes surreal, sometimes moving - always excellent. This is a wonderful collection, and although not quite on a par with the earlier (and very similar) McSweeney's Quarterly Concern Issue 13, it nonetheless manages to provide a comprehensive overview of comics, cartoons, and other "graphic fiction." The inclusion of Charles Schulz's "Developing a Comic Strip" article is a treat, and some of the individual strips included herein are simply brilliant. That said, there are a few duds in the mix, including marginal pieces by David Heatley, Mark Beyer, Jeffrey Brown, and several other mediocre creators. But then again, this volume includes Jaime Hernandez's stunning "Flies on the Ceiling", and it's hard to lob too much negative criticism on any collection that includes a contribution from Marc Bell. If you're looking for a wide-ranging, beautifully published introduction to the field, you could do a lot worse than Brunetti's An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories. no reviews | add a review
