Fiction. Science Fiction. HTML:In the Wheel of Time series, Robert Jordan has woven fantastic tales with the imaginative verve and epic sweep of J.R.R. Tolkien and Frank Herbert. In THE FIRES OF HEAVEN, the fifth installment in the series, the Last Battle is approaching rapidly, for the seals of the Dark One's prison are beginning to crumble. Rand Al'Thor, now fully realized as the Dragon Reborn, is closer to ruling the world, while the Forsaken Rahvin is meeting with three of his fellows to ensure their ultimate victory over the Dragon. As always, the stakes are nothing less than cosmic. All civilization depends on the Dark One's defeat.

I like story and series in general (I’ve read them all several times). That being said, the majority of the female characters unfortunately have gotten on my nerves many times and for the same behaviours, over and over again. Their tisking, braid pulling, and condescending (supposed to be funny?) comments about men get really old. And the male viewpoint of women isn’t much better. Some parts one just has to grin and bare. The main protagonist has a couple good battle scenes, but most of the supporting cast seemed to regress from powerful sorceresses to bickering children, which was deeply annoying and hurt their characterization. A subplot where some characters join a circus seemed really out of place. It was a struggle to finish this book, but I do want to know what happens next. ( )

a LOT happens in this book, so much to the point where you'd almost forgive Robert Jordan for leaving Perrin out of it. :P It's hard to follow The Shadow Rising, but ultimately there are consequences for what happened there.

Siuan must learn how to deal with her new circumstances, and fiercely fight to preserve the Aes Sedai order.

Rand reluctantly accepts being the Car'a'carn while batting away seeping thoughts that don't seem to be his.

Nynaeve and Elayne move across the map, but learn some humility (a smidge) as well as what can be done in Tel'aran'rhiod.

Mat also deals with memories he doesn't recognize and some unexpected strategic skills.

Finishing this up after finishing Dune makes the Fremen-Aiel parallels a little more obvious. ( )

In each book of this series, I have found Nynaeve increasingly annoying. In this one, my irritation turned to outright dislike. And where was Perrin? ( )

Epigraph
With his coming are the dread fires born again. The hills burn, and the land turns sere. The tides of men run out, and the hours dwindle. The wall is pierced, and the veil of parting raised. Storms rumble beyond the horizon, and the fires of heaven purse the earth. There is no salvation without destruction, no hope the side of death.
--fragment from The Prophecies of the Dragon believed translated by N'Delia Basolaine First Maid and Swordfast to Raidhen of Hol Cuchone (circa 400 AB)
Dedication
For Harriet The light of her eyes is my Light.

Elaida do Avriny a'Roihan absently fingered the long, seven-striped stole about her shoulders, the stole of the Amyrlin Seat, as she sat behind her wide writing table.
