This isn't really a brand new mystery novel by Agatha Christie. Instead its a novelization, by Christie biographer Charles Osborne, of a stage play by Agatha Christie. Reviews suggested that Osborne did a better job than I thought he did. It's okay, but it's very obvious that it was a play. I would describe it as "thinly novelized." Still, for those who are fans of Agatha Christie, this is a real discovery. Enjoy. ( )

This 'novel' was a very fast read and the solution was one I had toyed with before reaching the explanation but fans of Christie will most likely enjoy it. As the adaptation of a play it did read a bit like a novelization and much of the story was contained in the dialog with a lot of the action taking place offstage. That didn't detract from my enjoyment however and I could understand why several of her plays were very successful both on the stage and as movies.

A traveler gets stuck in a ditch and walks into the nearest house—where he finds a lady holding a revolver and her husband with a bullet hole in his head. Immediately, he offers to help conceal her guilt. But did she really do it? Like the best Poirots, although he does not feature in this mystery, the reader is led to more than one solution before the true, surprising story comes out. The prose is a bit workmanlike, perhaps, but quite readable. If you just can’t get enough Agatha Christie, Osbourne’s adaptations are worth picking up to get those last few mysteries that she wrote for the stage. ( )

The master of the house is murdered. The obvious suspect is his wife and she's all too willing to take the blame...who is she protecting?

I have a special fondness for this play. While I was directing it, the man who became my husband was playing the lead...it was during this production that we became very close. (Cue all jokes about sleeping with the director...) ( )

It was shortly before midnight on a chilly November evening, and swirls of mist obscured parts of the dark, narrow, tree-lined country road in South Wales, not far from the Bristol Channel whence a foghorn sounded its melancholy boom automatically every few moments.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0312975120, Mass Market Paperback)

Agatha Christie is the most widely published author of all time with her works outsold only by Shakespeare and the Bible. She is regarded by generations of fans as the greatest mystery writer ever, and her novels are read and cherished the world over.

Clarissa, the young wife of a Foreign Office Diplomat, delights in tweaking the sensibilities of her more serious friends and for playing a game she calls "supposing" - imagining a difficult situation and figuring out how people would respond. But Clarissa's lighthearted game becomes deadly serious when she discovers the dead body of an unknown person in her own drawing room. If that wasn't bad enough, her husband is on the way home with an important foreign politician and the attendant scandal of the dead body would irrevocably damage his career at the very least. Therefore, Clarissa decides to dispose of the body and persuades her three houseguests to help.

But before she can get the body off the premises, a policeman arrives at her front door. The police received an anonymous tip about a murder in the house and have shown up to investigate. Now Clarissa must keep the body hidden, convince the skeptical police inspector that there has been no murder, and, in the meantime, find out who has been murdered, why, and what the body is doing in her house.
