Dean Fenton styrer en lille by med hård hånd. Alle firmaer - bedemanden inklusive - betaler beskyttelsespenge til ham og forretningen går strålende. Sheriffer får enten en kort embedsperiode eller et kort liv. Indtil den dag hvor Lucky Luke dukker op i denne by uden lov og orden. I løbet af et kvarter er Fenton arresteret og byen begynder at falde fra hinanden. Fenton kommer i fængsel og fortæller sin historie til blandt andre Dalton-brødrene. Kort efter stikker de af, godt hjulpet af en knoldet telegrafist, der er nyansat i fængslet og som forveksler Joe Milton og Joe Dalton med hinanden. I fængslet finder man også Ra-Ta-Ta. Dalton-brødrene sætter kursen mod Fenton Town og omdøber den ved ankomsten omgående til Dalton City. Ra-Ta-Ta følger efter dem og hjælper dem til at fange Lucky Luke, da han dukker op. De lader være med at skyde ham, for de har planer om at gøre byen til et attraktivt opholdssted for andre skurke, så Lucky Luke bliver tvunget til at være testperson for deres restaurant, hotel og så videre.
Et hold syngepiger Belle, Linda, Dolly, Rosa og stjernen Lulu Karabin kommer til medbringende pianisten Wallace.
Lucky Luke sætter lus i skindpelsen ved at bilde Joe ind at Lulu er forelsket i William. Han foreslår at de inviterer alle egnens banditter til bryllup, men Joe vil gerne selv være brudgom, så Lucky Luke lader som om han spørger Lulu på Joes vegne, men han siger bare til Lulu at Joe gerne vil lave en stor gallaforestilling til ære for hende. En masse banditter dukker op, men der bliver stor skandale for Lulu er allerede gift med Wallace. Et stort slagsmål bryder ud og Lucky Luke benytter sig af forvirringen til at bevæbne sig. Han holder positionen indtil kavalleriet dukker op. Alle banditterne bliver arresteret og smidt i det samme fængsel og Dalton-brødrene er naturligt nok ret upopulære ved de andre.

Morsom historie, der er morsomt fortalt og fyldt med små finurlige detaljer. ( )
