I'm becoming increasingly fastidious vis-à-vis my kid's kids' books: this is a Russian folktale about a plucky cat who becomes governor of the local oblast and his nervy fox wife who tricks all the local bully animals and the least becomes greatest and all that, and it is fun. But then I can see Emmett struggling with noncomprehension and incipient distress with the cat eating the birds and the bear eating the bullock (the basic action here is about carnivores tricking other carnivores out of prey), and especially the deep pink charnel horror that is the ram that the wolf skins and brings as tribute, and I'm like, he is a vegetarian baby, next book please.
