Funny how varying the reactions to Mr. Pip are in the reviews. I gave it a 3 1/2 but didn't find it objectionable. It read as a passage from innocence to experience tale, to me, with the first part of the book on the island the world of innocence until experience intruded, finishing up entirely ...

*****Commonwealth Writers Prize 2007 WINNER:
Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones (New Zealand)
77> amandameale: Yes, I think reading Mister Pip might have been at your suggestion a few months ago - many thanks! I did like the slight twist towards the end when she finds Great Expectations in the school library (I haven't read it (*shame*), so I didn't see that coming - though I'm not ...

Pleased to find someone else who has read Mister Pip . I thought it was very good and liked the link to Great Expectations.
I read this week in The Age (Melbourne) that Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones has won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize.
Article here.. http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/text-book-sets-the-standard-again/2007/05/27/1180205077415.html . Has there been much publicity in New Zealand about this?

... and read something else" routine for this one. In between I've read The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory, and Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones. The Phillipa Gregory is not something I would normally have picked up, but it was recommended by an old workmate and I really enjoyed it. ...
Two books this week:
Daylight by Elizabeth Knox, and
Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones, which I've already finished (and really enjoyed).
This year I read Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones. On the island of Bougainville, a teacher reads Great Expectations to his class and the ramifications are disastrous. Mister Pip uses themes from the Dickens book as part of its own story.
I recently read Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones and thought it was very good. The only other New Zealand novelist I know of is Janet Frame.
Can anyone recommend other authors?
... by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
2. The Woman Who Walked into Doors by Roddy Doyle
3. Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden
4. Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones
... hasn't been released yet or 2) whatever reviews I read weren't good. I only keep a record of those that sound promising.
Mister Pip is a worthy choice and I'm currently reading In the Country of Men which is also pretty good.
I've just watched the show. I read Mister Pip recently and thought it was very good. I enjoyed the parallels between Great Expectations and what happened in the novel. Some of the Book Club panel were dissatisfied but perhaps they could have looked at it more closely. I found a lot of substance ...
... A very amusing main character
FEBRUARY
7. Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden (Canada)*** Haunting war story
8. Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones (New Zealand)**
9. The Woman who Walked into Doors by Roddy Doyle (Republic of Ireland)*** VERY GOOD

Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones (New Zealand. Uses the reading of Great Expectations as a catalyst for terrible events. Recommended.
Finished Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones. The reading of Great Expectations sets off an horrific series of events. Themes from the Dickens novel are picked up in the story. Not a difficult read, but leaves you with lots to think about. Recommended.
Also finished The Woman Who Walked into Doors ...
#113 killeymoon: I have now almost finished Mister Pip and I do recommend it. It's deceptively simple, that is, easy to follow but raises a some serious questions. Let me know if you ever read it and we can discuss.
112 > Please let us know what you think of Mister Pip - I have it on my list of "potential purchases".
... Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden (Canada) - a moving account of a Cree Indian's experience in WWI.
Now reading Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones (New Zealand) set on the Pacific island of Bouganville. A teacher's reading of Great Expectations sets off an alarming series of events.
I'm in Bouganville, which is part of the Solomon Islands, and a province of Papua New Guinea. My book is Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones (New Zealand). Once again I had to go off to Wikepedia for a map and history of Bouganville even though it is quite a close neighbour of mine.
Is anyone else watching it? I love that Australia now has a TV book show with a discussion group. I will be reading Mister Pip for 6th March. I regret that Germaine Greer was a guest on the Christmas show and will elaborate on that if encouraged.
