This message has been deleted by myself as one of the comments I made obviously offended someone.
No offence was meant of course. ... too, but having just read The Unknown Terrorist and thought it pretty 'meh' (aka sub-standard), and also having not liked Dirt Music by the mostly universally praised Tim Winton, it's nice to be able to slag off a bit.
And I HATE anything by Bryce Courteney. (I have my reasons, but I ... My favourite is The Riders, then (in order) Cloudstreet, Blueback and Breath. Not Dirt Music. I wasn't mad about Dirt Music and I just don't get Shirley Hazzard at all.
But The Book of Rapture by Nikki Genmmell is one of the worst books I have ever read and the only one to receive a 0/5 rating. Hey guys. I finished Dirt Music the other day and LOVED it. I found a hardcover copy of Cloudstreet at a used bookstore the other day for very cheap (and it's basically brand new, I love when that happens) so I'll be starting that soon.
In the middle of True History of the Kelly Gang right ... So glad I found this thread.......I thought I was alone in disliking the characters in Dirt Music, and because I live in the Blue Mountains I really wanted to like The Service of Clouds but was very disappointed. 14 Sounds like your well on your way!
I preferred Saint Tim's Cloudstreet to Dirt Music so it will be interesting to see if you feel the same.
Calling Winton a saint because of his 4 individual wins of "The Miles Franklin". He is the only one to win that many apart from Thea Astley who ...
Agreed, I didnt like Dirt Music it was beautifully written, but I felt the plot was uninspired and some of the characters didn't appeal to me at all.
I've only seen the movie of Oscar and Lucinda and again the characters didn't appeal to me (I think I see a pattern) which has put me off ... Dirt Music by Tim Winton
I've only read 3 of Tim Wintons, cloudstreet, Blueback and Dirt Music. All well written. I liked cloudstreet the most. Blueback is a children's tale and absolutely beautiful, although appealed more to me then my children. Dirt Music I'm one of the people who also was on the ... ... favourite for me – it was quite bizarre, and I liked the faintly historical aspect of it. I didn't care much for Dirt Music, although the plot, initially, was good. I didn't like The Riders as it seemed to me that he was losing his distinctive voice, and the plot was fairly ... ... favourite for me – it was faintly bizarre, and I liked the faintly historical aspect of it. I didn't care much for Dirt Music, although the plot, initially, was good. I didn't like The Riders as it seemed to me that he was losing his distinctive voice, and the plot was fairly ... I was underwhelmed by Dirt Music, thought Turning was great, and could see the appeal of Cloud Street but it didn't particularly grab me. (However, it was very much a part and time of Australia for my parents, so I can see why they loved it.) ... Winton's that I read, and it took quite a lot of persuading to get me to read another. But I did: either The Turning or Dirt Music, both of which I read aloud when passenger on car trips, wold be my favourite. Dirt Music comes in first for me, especially the first part of the novel. The Turning is equally compelling, but not as sustained. ... went there almost immediately after. I picked up:
Life and Times of Michael K
Under the Frangipani
Dead Souls
Dirt Music
Empire of the Sun
Earthly Powers
Requiem ... A fraction of the whole and Wanting. I've heard that Breath is good but the only other Tim Winton book that I have read is Dirt Music and I have to say that it didn't really grab me. Of course, I'm willing to accept that maybe I would like some of his other books better, and that maybe it was ... ... wanted this for a good while..have never read
>166..after The Turning you might like to try The Riders..then Dirt Music (but i never got to finish that last one ;-(
J Thanks for your comments on my thread! I've heard good things about Tim Winton, so I will probably add Dirt Music to my list.
So sorry about what I said about Australian Universities! *blushes* I didn't even think that that might offend anyone. And now I feel like a typical American. Whoops. I ... ... you've listed, but I'll only mention a few that I highly recommend:
I haven't read Cloudstreet yet, but I've read Dirt Music by the same author and it is absolutely brilliant. If you end up liking Cloudstreet you should definitely add Dirt Music to your list too.
I read The Abs ... In no particular order:

Dirt Music by Tim Winton
The Getting of Wisdom by Henry Handel Richardson

It's probably my favourite book set in Australia by an Australian author. Dirt Music by Tim Winton - really enjoying this one I never heard of Dirt Music or Tim Winton and thanks to LT, I have to go out and search for this intriguing author. You people, you are relentless!
From Bookmooch: The Driftless Area by Tom Drury. The only other book I've read by Drury was The End of Vandalism and I thought it was ... ... sorry for people who don't get excited about books or about reading. They don't know what they're missing.

This is my first Tim Winton novel. I have yet to read Cloudstreet, The Riders, or Dirt Music but will definitely get to them eventually.

Another book that has been brought out with a matching CD is Dirt Music by Tim Winton which contains a very eclectic selection from classical to world music - and Australian, too.

I wish I was more enthusiastic about cloudstreet and dirt music, I might try a second reading since some of you have found them better the second time 'round.

I really enjoy this translation. I'm about to read an Australian novel called Dirt Music maybe you'll help me?
I was very impressed by Dirt Music by Tim winton. Set in Western Australia (I believe Winton is from Perth) it was not only a good story but the spare but effective prose style conveyed the atmosphere wonderfully. I'm a Brit who's only visited S.E. I'd asked for advice from another member for which Oz authors to try and he suggested Tim Winton's Dirt Music and I'm so glad I took him up on the suggestion. I was a bit eh about Cloudstreet (although my parents were big fans, and I can see why), and even more eh about Dirt Music. But a friend lent me The Turning and I thought that was great!
(Strange. The touchstones aren't working for some of ... I liked The Riders and Cloudstreet very much; also Blueback which was marketed as a children's novel. Apart from that, I can't help you. Hi all
Are there any Tim Winton fans out there? A lot of the editions aren't yet combined, and someone submitted Cloudstreet covers for The turning. Yuck!
It needs major cleaning up, but I don't know enough about his books to do it!
Amanda, Perth ... I found the ending of The God of Small Things particularly wonderful as was (Tim Winton)'s final paragraph of Dirt Music. On the other hand (Jane Austen)'s Emma has a delightful, predictable "happy ending", as does A Room With a View however they are also two of my favourite ...
