1292. George IV Prince of Wales 1762-1811, by Christopher Hibbert (read 21 Sep 1974) George IV was born 12 Aug 1762 and was sworn in as Regent Feb 5, 1811. It is unbelievable that such a worthless person was not simply kicked out of public life. His worthlessness is unbelievable. He married Maria Fitzherbert but since the marriage did not have his father's approval it was contrary to the Royal Marriage Act of 1777. He married Caroline--an awful person--and had a daughter by her. His morals were abysmal. This is a well-written book, although much seemed familiar since on Aug 10, 1973 I read King William IV and on July 14, 1973 I read The Trial of Queen Caroline (she seemed a less obnoxious person in that book) and on Mar 25, 1973 I read King George III. So the whole sordid story is pretty well-known to me. ( )

At St James's Palace, during the late afternoon of 12 August 1762, Lord Cantelupe, Vice-Chamberlain to Queen Charlotte, was told that her Majesty was in labour; he was instructed to hold himself ready to notify the King immediately the baby was born.
Author's Note
This biography of King George IV is based largely upon his papers in the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle, and I have to thank Her Majesty the Queen for graciously permitting me to make full use of them.
