With this close examination of the attitudes and processes that the German conquest brought to Ukraine in 1941, the author tries to tie what the Nazis believed about empire-building to what actually happened. If nothing else one has to conclude that Ukraine might be the most unhappy country of the 20th century, as after having been subjected to the full brunt of Stalin's nation-breaking, its people were subjected to Nazi crassness and bloodiness at its worst; it's the business that gives utopia a bad name. Lower provides the most complete assessment available of German colonization and the Holocaust in Ukraine, the "jewel" of the Nazi empire. In this unprecedented attempt at Nazi empire building, violence, racism, antisemitism, and militarism pervaded all aspects of everyday life. Lower argues that it was in the eastern outposts of the Reich, such as Ukraine, that the regime's core beliefs, aims, and practices were revealed.
