This is a book from our childhood shelf. I think it pairs well with Laura Ingalls-Wilder. The pictures say so much more than the text that I feel this is a Larry McMurtry novel condensed. Its content is really quite harrowing. The cartoonish nature of the drawings will temper the horror a bit though, for the youngest readers. ( )
