While not as well written as the first two in this series, this one still delivers a real emotional punch from the shocking aspect of the story itself. Horus has now declared war on the galaxy and the god-like Emperor himself, and the reader is subjected to the angst of seeing many, good, loyal characters betrayed and destroyed by Horus' treachery. This one also sets up the coming conflict between those loyal to the Emperor and those who wish a universal rule by a godless people led by Horus. Funny how these science fiction stories can parallel today's events philosophically.... ( )

Galaxy In Flames was not as good as the first two books but it looks like it has set the stage for a lot to happen in the fourth novel. The Warmaster along with Abaddon and Little Horus have very small parts in this book until the very end. But Saul Tarvitz, Lucius and Lord Commander Eidolon who Loken first meet on Murder have large parts to play. ( )

This is the final book in the opening trilogy of the Horus Heresy, following Horus Rising by Dan Abnett and False Gods by Graham McNeill. It picks up a year on from the events of False Gods. The Heresy moves on apace, as Horus plots to destroy all those who oppose his plans to usurp the Emperor. The rebel planet of Isstvan III will provide the arena as brother fights brother, and the full horror of Horus' intentions is realised.

I gave the previous two books very favourable reviews, and I wanted to like this one - I really did! At some points - where the events took on a momentum that managed to disguise the poor writing - it actually became readable, but I would say a good two-thirds of this book were fairly dull. This is disappointing when considering the wonderful job done by Dan Abnett in opening the series and then Graham McNeill in sowing the seeds of the betrayal.

The third book in the first trilogy of the Horus Heresy is fantastic. This is a book about the first stand for the emperor against the Traitor Horus, and the great battle of Isstvan III. Horus shows his true colours to the imperium, the rememberencers are killed and the next stage of attack is planned. Ben Counter, while obviously working from Dan Abnett’s outline, is a great author. He is a very descriptive writer, and makes you feel as if you are present during the bloodshed and his word choice evokes just the right emotions from the reader. I anxiously await the next book in the Horus Heresy, as well as other novels by mister Counter. ( )

Third book in the series takes place on planet Istvaan that is to become a battlefield between loyal and traitor (Horus lead) Space Marine Legions.
Great story and lots of action. Recommended. ( )
