Aristotle's Poetics combines a complete translation of the Poetics with a running commentary, printed on facing pages, that keeps the reader in continuous contact with the linguistic and critical subtleties of the original while highlighting crucial issues for students of literature and literary theory. Whalley's unconventional interpretation emphasizes Aristotle's treatment of art as dynamic process rather than finished product. the tradition surrounding this is responsible for incredible short-sightedness in western aesthetics, i.e. the obsession with thematic content and plot (related to and flawed for the same reasons as are western metaphysics of illusion and reality). do not try to explain plot holes to me, or draw up a big diagram of soundplay in a sonnet of shakespeare, or explain to me the technical difficulty involved in subsurface scattering and how mastery of xyz element is such that all the science experts around the table can add the work to the unending list of historically valuable works of art. there is no reason to think this way!!!! i HAVE the effect of all that work right in front of me, and the exact structure of its material causality is not going to make me feel any different!!

not even useful for understanding contemporary material to any degree of detail ( )

Interesting. The free ebook version, first published 1920, has a brief but helpful preface by a Gilbert Murray (text is the Oxford translation). It’s a shame the section on comedy was lost; I’d love to know what Aristotle thought about the Old Comedy, Aristophanes especially. I guess we’ll never know (though I’m sure most of humanity finds it unbearable being left in this particular darkness). ( )

I read this book in an effort to enhance my personal hobby of script writing. If I recall correctly, I read somehwere that this is an important book regarding proper plot structure. Having read the book I believe this to be true. It touches upon tragedy, epics, comedies, plot, character, reasoning among other things. ( )

Epigraph
Dedication
First words
Although Aristotle's Poetics appears to have had little impact on literary criticism in antiquity, critics and scholars since the Renaissance have placed this brief work at the very center of the criticism of poetry and drama.
--Preface (Norton edition, 1982)
Aristotle composed the Poetics with the Greek tradition of poetry alive before his eyes.
--Introduction (Norton edition, 1982)
The art of poetry, both in its general nature and in its various specific forms, is the subject here proposed for discussion.
--Body text (Norton edition, 1982)
What is poetry, how many kinds of it are there, and what are their specific effects?
[Anthony Kenny translation]
