A set of interesting short stories on true crime. It does read slightly old-fashioned in style but the stories are interesting, many of which I had never heard of before. They're full of a restraint that's not often seen in modern crime-writing.
The Title story is about a man who fell in and out of love with women and murdered one of them. Edgar Wallace writes with his usual ablom.
Second up is "The Tragic Love Story of an Emperor's Son" by William le Queux - the story of death that still has questions of why. Suicide or murder, depression or trying to escape possible disaster.
"The Trial of the Siren Duchess" by L Melville is all about a bigamist english duchess and the scandal she left behind her after a trial to find out her marital status.
"The Assassination of Konigsmarck" by Max Pemberton is the story of love lost and vicious rumour that killed a man, no-one knows if it was true, but it has some basis in truth.
"The Mystery of the Rue Princesse" by Sir John Hall is a story of murder in Paris, with a lot of twists.
"Mystery of the Marie Celeste" by H J Andrews has a solution to this age-old mystery that I haven't seen before and was interesting.
Last but not least "The murder of Mr Gold" by Russ Arnold is the story of a man wanting to make his name by murdering someone. ( )
