A beautiful book based on a true event. Orphaned Ursula lives with her aunt and uncle in 1824 Gotland. She can't knit, though everyone else on the island does and this makes her feel as though she doesn't belong. Every autumn Aunt Dana goes with the "sweater ladies" by ship to sell their knitting in Stockholm. This year Ursula worries about the ship sinking, though no one else does- until it is long overdue to return. In a effort to make something happen, Ursula teaches herself to knit a mitten in the "safe return" pattern Aunt Dana once showed her, giving herself hope after everyone else has given up. A great story for knitters! ( )
