Little people can feel different, this book is great for all children

This is a story about a girl who is insecure about her height but finds a girl similar to her while visiting the circus. At first, I thought the plot was a little strange and not a usual picture book topic. But, children would definitely find a connection to it in some way. The illustrations are crooked and a little wacky but it adds to the different height theme of the book. ( )

This story is about a dwarf who feels there is no one else out there like her. She goes to the circus one day and is amazed to see another dwarf like her. She talks to Pia the other dwarf about feeling alone and wanting to know if there are other girls and boys like her. This is a great story for children to read if they don't feel accepted for who they are and even a good way to get kids to know that people have feelings whoever they are. ( )

In the beginning of this book, Trudi, a little girl who is a dwarf, feels badly about her physical appearance. She tries to make herself taller and fantasizes about meeting someone else like her. One day she goes to the circus, and meets a beautiful animal trainer named Pia. Together they talk about an imaginary island of little people. Pia helps her feel better about herself and tells her about the hundred and four other little people she has met!

This is a nice story about an issue that is not talked about much, with quirky, imaginative illustrations. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0689846835, Hardcover)

Many nights the dwarf girl, Trudi, fell asleep hoping that her body would stretch itself overnight, that she'd wake up and be the size of other girls her age.

Trudi doesn't know anybody like her. No one with short arms that can't reach coat hooks, or short legs that dangle in chairs; no one small enough to look into her eyes.

No one, that is, until she meets Pia at the circus. Pia is a lion tamer -- strong and fearless and, most important, a dwarf like Trudi. When Pia asks for a volunteer to step into the ring, Trudi doesn't hesitate. And together, they weave tales of a magical island where people are little and never lonely. After the enchantment ends, Pia shares a secret with Trudi: Feeling that you belong starts with loving yourself.

Adapted from Ursula Hegi's best-selling novel Stones from the River -- and perfectly paired with Giselle Potter's poignant illustrations -- this moving story of a girl's search for acceptance captures what it feels like to be different...and then what it feels like to realize that you're not.
