This volume is actually a compilation of two separate books: The Gospel of Buddha edited by Paul Carus, and The Word of the Buddha edited by Nyanatiloka. Carus note that Buddhism as a religion in many regions has found the original philosophical vein too cold for wide popular appeal, and has been popularized by the adoption of a mythology and a hierarchy of gods and demons. Thus he has limited these additions in his attempt to provide the life-story and teachings of the Buddha in a format similar to a New Testament gospel. The second book is a codification of the the teachings known as the Eightfold Path tio Deliverance from Suffering. The book is therefore a guide to the practice of Buddhism as a way of life with a philosophic basis, rather than as a religion. The two books complement each other making this a valuable guide and introduction to Buddhism. ( )
