ספרו הראשון של תומס. הנושאים הרגילים - שירה שבע"פ, מין, סבל, שואה. הספור מתרחש בדיקטטורה ללא שם, שהיא תרכובת של גרמניה הנאצית וברה"מ תחת סטאלין. הגיבורה - כנועה, טובה, אוהבת, מינית - המוזה הקלסית. עוברת תלאות אינסופיות בסגנון קנדיד. בתחילה הספר מייגע בלאקוניות שלו, אך לקראת הסוף הוא מצליח לסחוף. (
